Eastpoint” to Attend Playoffs

It has been reported from our Club officer, Assistant Business Manager, Mr.. Mel Mitchell that he has personally talked with Mr. Al “Eastpoint” Barnett of Atlanta, Georgia, and that Mr. Barnett says he will visit our Championship Tournament and the Joe Wilson Playoff on September 29, 2006.  The word is, he has issued a warning to tell a certain “chicken (bleep) lawyer out of Gary, Indiana to “stay out of town.”  He says that the town (Chicago) is not big enough for both of them.  I personally issued the message to Mr. Lay and WE agreed that Mr. Barnett don’t dictate to Chicago-area players who can and cannot be in OUR town.  After all, this is still Buster’s town.  And his legacy lives on.

As all would know, “Buster” protected us from INTRUDERS for nearly fifty years.  But he did warn us that after he’s gone, a day like this would come. And, he said, when it did, we would have to carry the torch ourselves.  With Mr. Barnett’s visit, (if he does visit), we will now have to deal with two elite Top Masters.  But it’s all right.’  Consequently, we will not stand idly by if someone tries to intimidate our good friend Mr. Clorius Lay.  I, myself, might still have some issues to settle with “Eastpoint” for what he did to me in Memphis in 2001.  I have already begun brushing up on some of my games. And so, we say, this is still our turf.  Bring it on!”

It all started when Mr. Mitchell’s son visited the club about a year age.  Mr.-Williams, I believe his name is, who is not a pool checkers player himself- just happened to mention to us that he had visited a barber shop in his home city of Atlanta, and that a guy came in and whipped every player in the shop.  After our inquiry about a description, we immediately knew it was “Eastpoint”- the seven times APCA champion.  Mr. Williams told us that when he returned home he was going to acquaint himself with Mr. Barnett.  Not only did they become acquainted, they also became great friends as well.

As a result of this acquaintance, Mr. Williams has indicated to his father, Mr. Mitchell that he would personally drive “Eastpoint” to Chicago for the Championship Playoffs.  And there you have it.  With what initially started out as a friendly “Bragging Rights” Family match with our INVITED guest Mr. Wilson, has now become a potentially all-out war with an INTRUDER and some of America’s best Pool Checkers players.  Stay tuned or visit the Club on that day.

Eastpoint” Arrives in Chicago Talking ’Trash’ but Leaves a Little More Subdued

All time great and legendary player, Al “Eastpoint” Barnett, of Atlanta Georgia arrived in Chicago on Wednesday, September 27, 2006 - two days before our scheduled Championship Playoffs.  Almost before he entered the premises. Mr. “Point” was talking trash.  After taking out a very talkative Jr. Master/Gold Bar player, Mr. Lee Pittman (2-0). The great “Point” was talking non-stop. It was about a variety of subjects-most notably “Pecan’s” 3rd and 4th picks for The All Time 20 Greatest Players of America Pool Checkers.

Only after he was reminded that he had his fact mixed up and that he had some  “serious issues” to settle, right there in Atlanta, about the number 5 and 6 picks did he become a little less provocative.  We reminded him that “The Claw” had indicated to us that he was unhappy with my 5th and 6th selections.

In addition, the “Point” was threatening to walk through Chicago area players like Sherman walked through Atlanta - on his way to the sea (Where are you Mr. Gooche?).  Excoriating all of Chicago, perhaps with the possible exception of Daley I, (the father of Chicago’s current mayor Daley) and Michael Jordan, “The Point” was all mouth.

Local players stood in utter shock and disbelief as Mr. Barnett continued to berate the locals.  He quieted down somewhat only after he was reminded that he was “guest,” and as long as he was here, we were going to try to treat him as such-but he couldn’t come in to our town talking all crazy like he was.  And we assured him that he would be provided with the competition that was necessary to keep him entertained as long as he was here. And that we would hope that he would let his playing do his talking.  We were then somewhat able to quiet him down a little.  Additionally, it’s believed here that ‘others’ talked to him and suggested that perhaps he could be a little less combative.

Whatever the case, time would prove that “The Point” would be in for the shock of his life.  After his lashing of the Jr. Master/Gold Bar player, he engaged Master player Fred D. (The Shark) Shurn.  Mr. Shurn repulsed his advances.  The score was 1-1 in, I think, three games.  But the best was yet to come.

In waiting for his scheduled match the next day with Clorius “Mongoose” Lay (Who never showed), the mighty “Point” was to engage Al “Action” Lambert, who didn’t play in the Championship Tournament, in a twelve games match. That’s where the battle began.  When the dust settled, the “Point” survived 2-1.  But there was more to come.  Disregarding others that we had lined up to play him, “the “Point” challenged Al to another match the very next day.  In a perhaps a six hour battle, the “Point” fell 1-2.  Mr. Lambert perhaps had his finest hour in this one.  The score was now 3 - 3 overall and the “Point,” seemed to begin to realize that he was in a “dog fight.”  And there was more than one dog involved in the fight. There was one member who swore he had seen “blood” coming from “The Point.” Another one shouted “ Y’all tell that “Point” this ain’t Sparta, Georgia, and we are not the “Money Players” of the world either.

And yet, there was more to come.  While he waited for Mr. Lambert to show up for their third encounter, OrlandoPanama” Williams walked in.  In a very emotional “trash talking” barrage by both players, Mr. Williams stood him off.  The score was 2-2.  But, I think “Panama’ got the best of the “trash talking” in this one, because not only did he catch “The Point” in his infamous “Ushaa Cow” game in which he won, He also proposed to the “Point” that he would play him for some “high stakes” on the Big Board (100 Square) since there seemed to have been some suggestion that a little “bread” be put up.  There were those of us in the audience who suspected that “The Point” didn’t need any part of the “Panama Kid” on the Big Board.  And the “Point” confirmed our suspicions by declining.

On the final day, Lambert returned for their third encounter.  The “Point” won this one 1-0 in an abbreviated 6 games match.  After it was all said and done, Mr. Barnett, the 5th rated player in all of American Pool Checkers history, left Chicago with a one game cushion in perhaps 40 games or more with our elite players.  One kibitzer exclaimed, “ The Point” know he ‘ducked a bullet.’

And, I think, somewhere in Pool Checkers heaven, “Buster” was smiling.

“Pecan“.

Announcement!

As has already been mentioned, the Club HSPCCC will be traveling to Indianapolis, In. on  Saturday,  April 15, 2006 (10 A.M. - 6:30 P.M.).  It’s our belief that this would be a great opportunity for you, the player,   to fine tune your game in preparation for the APCA National in Columbus, OH.  in July of 2006.

Also, it’s our belief that a well attended event of this nature, including players, kibitzers, and just plain observers will go a long ways in helping to generate continued interest in the Game in order to help preserve its legacy.  As has already been observed, our website:  www.hspccc.com have teamed with Mr. C. Gooche’s website, http://americanpoolcheckers.us in order to bring on-going activities “for the good of the game.“ and to do just that.

In our visit, we are prepared to arranged a series of 10 game matches with same level opponents, such that there will be fair and equitable competition among all.  Of course, there will be “free play” games for those who do not take to the  scheduled games format.  Additionally, we are hopeful of helping the Indianapolis players team with other players in the area to become an ally in the Regional Community.

Since this will be an attempt to get the Regional Concept jump-started, we have promised Mr. Gooche anywhere from  5 to 10 recorded games to be displayed on T-Dam for our global audience.

We hope to see you there!

A Tribute to Mr. Clarence Gooche

GOOCHE’S MASTERPIECE

Again, wonderful Gooche.  Yours’ is a MASTERPIECE-especially for a beginner.  It’s a credit to the game.  Hopefully, it will join with other sites about the Game of American Pool Checkers and continue to help popularize the game that has always been popular with us.

I am especially impressed with your fusion of text, sound, and image-all coordinated to give the viewer a great feeling as he surfs the different sections of your work. The videos, that  are offered, from some of the clubs are of impressive quality as one takes a peak at the American Pool Checkers player “up close” and “in his environment” while enjoying the game they have come to love.

Additionally, you were very gracious in giving praise to those who helped and gave you the insight, motivation, and energy to pursue your dream. It’s a job well done.

     Long live the Site!!

… Now the real challenge has come.  That challenge is to provide, meaningful, interesting, and updated materials for your audience.. That task is not only yours though.  First of all, the game itself must be of such that there will be on-going activities such that it can be showcased.  Secondly, the players, (the guardians of the game) must be receptive enough to the activities that are planned  such that your job of reporting and showcasing it will be made much easier.  And thirdly, there ought to be others who are willing to “step up to the plate” and work  to help to make the site an ongoing  success.

With that bit of commentary, I am hopeful that your site, HTTP://AMERICANPOOLCHECKERS.US    and our site WWW.HSPCCC.COM  can work together to meet the challenges ahead of us. I encourage viewers to log on to either site, at their convenience,  to become more apprised of the on-going activities in the world of the Game.

.

Thanks, “Pecan”

An APCA  Tournament Announcement!

From the Desk of Checker Director, Wayne Lockheart

Time is moving on in the direction of our much-anticipated 2006 APCA 40th Annual Checker Tournament held in our Ohio’s capital Columbus, Ohio.  I, Wayne Lockheart, our APCA National Tournament Director would like to extend greetings and good health to all.

A few points I would like to touch on are as follows:

Firstly, since the time of our last tournament many of our checker brothers have passed on and we as brother checker players extend our condolences to families and friends to all who have lost loved ones of our checker family.  A moment of special remembrance goes out to former National Checker Director of 36 years, Dr. Nathaniel Leach and the co-founder of APCA.  Also for Paul Haskins, President of Detroit Checker Club and long time great Gold Bar Players and to any others not mentioned at this time.

Secondly, I would like to express my personal gratification at the seemingly new interest in the checker world, as there seems to be more than usual talk of new participation in our upcoming tournament.  Also noticing that there are a large number of individual competitions of our greatest checker players.  I believe these are great for the advancement of our great game.

Thirdly, I hope for the growth and advancement of our game.  I can’t help but encourage all as I listen to the talk and read e-mails as to how many readily and willingly financially contribute to other checker projects in support of individual matches.  I certainly applaud and congratulate all who have and will be involved in such endeavors.  But, I encourage all to consider our own APCA National Organization.  Meaning, great is the fact that we anticipate this year’s tournament to be financially better than any other tournament we have ever had and it has been guaranteed a purse of $2,000.00 for first place Top Master Winner.  This shows the progress of our game.

Now our plan of sponsorship of our National Tournament by those of us who can and will can propel our tournament status immensely.  It is asked that all checker players be a sponsor in this and each year’s tournament.  Which means a donation of $100.00 for each tournament sometime during the year.  I have long since sent in my money for sponsorship of the ’06 tournament.  I’m thankful to have been able to do it because I might not always be able.

By calculation if we as an organization could depend on 50 or more to commit to be a sponsor from year to year, it would increase our financial status by approximately $5,000.00 yearly and times 10 years would mean $50,000.00 going through our organization.  $50,000.00 would certainly elevate the status, consideration and participation of any game or organization.

Also the raffle tickets, which are also a fundraiser, have been distributed early enough for each club to give their best effort to sell all the tickets that have been sent to them.

Now lastly, as Tournament Director, I have since the last tournament been working constantly and diligently on improving the current scoring system to eliminate any and all mistakes in future tournaments.  What each player can do to help me in this endeavor is to send me at my personal e-mail address (waynelockheart@aol.com) the following information:

Name (First and last)

Address (Number and Street Name)

City, State and Zip Code

Telephone (please include area code)

Personal E-mail address (if applicable)

Playing Class

This information will go into my personal database, which will make it easier for me at tournament time to make our scorecards for each classification.  All I will have to do is access the database and hit one button.  This will save me much time and writing.  All information sent to me will be held in the strictest confidence, I assure you.  I need to update the information of all current players and also even if you have not played in a National Tournament.  I would like to have anyone who is interested in playing to send this information so I can put it into my database.  For the sake of being able at any given time to relate any pertinent checker information to all interested parties.

Again please send information to my e-mail, as it will be kept private.  Anyone who may wish to contact me by telephone can reach me at either telephone number listed below:

Home  419-474-8835

Cell    419-215-3573

Thank you for your time and consideration and I look forward to hearing back from all of you soon.

My Best regards,

Wayne Lockheart

National Tournament Director
