THOMPSON WINS CHICAGO BIG-BOARD CHECKERS TOURNEY!

Charles "Pecan" Thompson, Carol Stream, Illinois, won the Chicago Big-Board Checkers tournament on Saturday, July 19, 2008, with a perfect 10 points in 5 games.   He defeated his fellow Chicago master, Orlando "Panama" Williams, in the climactic last round.  Williams had been nicked for a draw by Neil Wenberg, of Pennsylvania, in an earlier games, so he needed a win, not a draw, to stop Thompson.  But it was not to be, and Williams placed second with 7.

The 6-player tourney was held in the Holiday Inn-Countryside/Lagrange, near Chicago, after the end of the National Pool Checkers Tournament.  Dr. Don Guy, New Castle, Delaware, guaranteed a $600 prize fund, and Roger Blaine was the tournament director.

A pleasant surprise was the appearance of Ramon Dionisio, of nearby Darien, Ill., who is one of the strong young players of straight checkers.  Dionisio had just learned the 100-square game two months ago, playing on the Internet, and did well against the older experienced players!   Dionisio, Wenberg, and Guy tied for third with 4 points each.

The standings (1 points per win, 1 per draw):
Rank --- name -------------city, state --------points---prize:

1.  CHARLES THOMPSON   Carol Stream IL    10       $300
2.  Orlando Williams          Chicago                 7       $150
3.  Neil Wenberg               Harmony    PA       4         $50
4.  Ramon Dionisio            Darien       IL         4         $50
5.  Donell Guy                   New Castle  DE      4         $50

LAY, COLEMAN WIN SOUTH BEND FESTIVAL TOURNEYS!

Clorius "The Mongoose" Lay, of Gary, Ind., won the Pool Checkers

tourney on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007, at the 9th Annual Pool and International

Checkers Festival in South Bend, Indiana.   He scored 46 out of a

possible 56 points, using the system of 2 points per win and 1 point per

 draw.

Second place also went to an Indiana master, Eugene "Hamp" Hampton of

Indianapolis, who made 43, and Lee Pittman of Chicago was third at 42.

It was a very full day with 15 players in a double round robin, with

 competition going to midnight.

Some of our usual competitors, such as "Pecan" Thompson and Fred

Shurn, could not make it this time, but sent in registration fees to help

support the tournament.  Thanks to them, and also to Roberto Ernest,

Willie Coleman, and Panama Williams for their extra contributions.

Johnnie Coleman, who came 800 miles from the Washington, D.C. area,

won the International or Big-Board tourney on Sunday, with Arthur

"Sonny" Bell of South Bend, in second.  Sunday was quiet by comparison, with

 only 5 players.
