Lifetime Honorary Members

Clarence “Dude” Dew

(Retired)

He could have been a champion had it not been for “Buster.”  Mr. Dew will tell anyone who is listening that he played “Buster” for a lifetime and never won a game.  And that is why he quit, he will say.   Paradoxically, had he kept playing, he surely could have become an APCA Top Master - and possibly its champion.

Also, Mr. Dew was my first mentor.  Not only did he introduce me to “Buster” in a “slight of hand way” (See Legends of “Buster”/Pecan Man) at our website: www.hspccc.com), he also had a great deal to do with helping my game move to the next level.  Our many trips into St. Louis, Mo. to play (and standoff), Charles McDuffie, (the legend), Top Masters, George Cobbs, and Percy Ricks made both of our games battle-tested.

Mr. Dew came to Chicago in the sixties after having lived in Detroit and studying under the legendary William ”Boss Bullet Hole” Langley.  But his unfortunate forays with “Buster,” after having moved to Chicago, caused him much chagrin, and so he quit the game.

“But don’t despair Mr. Dew.  While “Buster” was winning APCA Championships, you were building a construction conglomerate-(Dew’s Construction Co.). We know it had a hand in building the New Comiskey Park (Home of the White Sox’s), Chicago’s downtown Thompson Center, and a long stretch of 63rd  Street on Chicago’s  South Side-in addition to other projects.  Your work will long be remembered.”

And so Mr. Dew, for your longtime association with the Game of American Pool Checkers

and your numerous financial contributions to the club HSPCCC for it’s activities, we the members would like to offer you

our heartfelt thanks and our most cherished award - that of  LIFETIME HONORARY MEMBESHIP.

Attorney Cannon Lambert

Attorney Lambert is the son of a proud father, our own APCA National Champion, Al “Action” Lambert.  (See, http://www.hspccc.com  and click on, The Champion’s Page- for more information about the National Champion).

I first met young Cannon, I think, in the eighties.  He was little more than a teenager at the time.    Young Cannon and his sister Cantrece ( who was even younger) were brought by their father Al,  to a tournament that I was asked to be the director of by our club-member, Mr. Ben Holloway (now deceased).  The tournament was held in the field house of the Village of Dixmore, Illinois.  Mr. Holloway was one of it’s Trustees and had asked us to bring our Game to his town.

The fact that young Cannon and his sister so enthusiastically participated in the tournament  of American Pool Checkers, while other teens of their age, were actively pursuing other interests, i.e. basketball, swimming, bowling, and others activities, I found amazing;  it  always gave hope to those of  us older players, who play and love the Game, that it’s future would somehow survive - and perhaps even prosper.  It also gave hope and inspired us to actively pursue other youths in our attempt to promote the Game.

Additionally, young Cannon, who has now become a successful attorney in his own Law firm, Karchmer and Lambert, P.C. was the first to take out an Ad on the Out Side Back Cover of our 2008 APCA Souvenir Book.

For those things, we say thanks Cannon-for your contribution to the Game of American Pool Checkers

and to our Club, HSPCCC.

Consequentially, we are offering you our highest award - that of  LIFETIME  HONORARY MEMBESHIP.

Attorney Cannon Lambert’s Bio - in his own words:

CANNON LAMBERT, Sr., Esq.

 BIOGRAPHY

As a child, Cannon always admired his checkers champion father, AL Lambert. Cannon just sort of expected that he would be a great checker player by birth right since his father was so great. Cannon quickly learned, however, after competing in one of Homan Square Checker and Chess Club’s youth tournaments that study, practice and hard work and not birth right lead to success in checkers. Cannon rapidly learned to respect just how much work and effort went into the extraordinary accomplishments that he witnessed his father achieve.

Ever since, Cannon’s respect for the game of checkers has never waned. Cannon also developed a love for chess as well, a game that his father, Al, also excels in. Recently, the two sat down for an extremely competitive game of chess and though teacher barely edged out pupil, Cannon’s appetite for victory remains great.

Legionary names in the game of American Pool Checkers are seared in the fabric of Cannon’s upbringing and he views these men as inspirations exhibiting admirable qualities like diligence, desire, focus and hard work. Men like, Carl “Buster” Smith, Charles “Pecan” Thompson, Bobby Hodo, Panama, Ohio, Fred Shurn and of course Al Lambert.

In 1993 Cannon sought and received a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Communications at the University of Illinois, Champaign, and in 1996 Cannon completed law school at the University of Iowa. After receiving his training at the Johnnie Cochran Firm in Chicago IL., Cannon went on to assume the position of partner with the firm of Karchmar & Lambert, P.C. in 2002. Cannon’s most recent notable successes include a 3.25 million dollar resolution in 2006 and a  3 million dollar resolution in 2007. Cannon, unlike many trial attorneys in Illinois, is licensed with the Federal Trial Bar as well.

“The example set by the men of the Homan Square Checker and Chess Club have helped to sustain my drive for excellence. Homan Square Checker and Chess men exemplify healthy competition, and the relentless pursuit of goals, all things that I strive to emulate in my professional life”, Says Cannon.

Cannon’s 12 years of law practice center in the areas of Wrongful Death, Personal and Catastrophic Injury and Medical Mal- Practice.
